We walked with her for a while, until we were a good ways from the camp. “Boy,” said Alex. “Auntie sure is upset.”

“Yes, she is,” said Aunt Carol, frowning. “I guess I would be, too.”

“Yeah,” said Carl. “Do you s’pose the Boogie Man got him?”

“I’m sure he did,” Aunt Carol said in a knowing tone.

“How do you know?” I asked.

“‘Cause I heard him when he went out to the outhouse that night.”

“You did?”

“Yeah. He and your Auntie had just come in from a walk, and he went back out ‘cause he had to go. I was up in my loft, and I heard him close both of the doors to the camp when he left.”

“Did you see him?” Alex asked.

“Yeah, but just for a second from my window, then he was out of site.” We walked on quietly for while as we got closer to the creek. Sitting on a big rock, she went on. “All of a sudden, I heard a commotion coming from outside. It sounded like a scream, but I couldn’t be sure over the loudness from downstairs. Man, that family of ours sure can be loud.” She finished her apple and chucked it into the woods. Some animal would eat the core.

“What happened next?” asked Jenny, her eyes wide.
